Plymouth Primary Schools Football League Rules

Standard football rules will apply, other than those mentioned below.

  • There will be no offside rule.
  • There will not be a retreat line.
  • Matches will be 6-a-side.
  • Matches will be 32 minutes long, with 4 quarters of 8 minutes and a 1 minute break after each quarter.
  • There is no limit to the number of substitutes.
  • ‘Roll on’ substitutions will occur throughout, as long as there is a stoppage in play and the referee has been notified. Play will resume when the gate to the pitch is closed.
  • The ball can be kicked over head-height.
  • Outfield players can enter the area and score from within the area.
  • If a goalkeeper comes out of the area, a penalty will be awarded.
  • Pass backs to the goalkeeper are allowed.
  • All free kicks are direct.
  • Shin pads must be worn at all times by all players.
  • Players can be any age up to Year 6 (11 years old).
  • If a team does not attend their fixture, the result will be recorded as a 5-0 loss for this team.
  • When a team is winning by 10 goals or more (eg. 10-0, 14-4 etc) there will be a break in the game. Staff from each school can mix up the players to make two even teams and the remainder of the match will be played as a friendly. For the purposes of the league, the result will be recorded from when the lead was greater than 10 goals.
  • If a team has an injured player, who cannot continue, and there are no remaining substitutes, the match will be played as 5-a-side from that point and then 4-a-side and so on.
  • Bibs will be provided if there are any colour clashes.
  • If two or more teams are equal on points at the end of the league, goal difference will be used, followed by goals scored, followed by the result between the two teams to separate them. If two or more teams are still equal, then the placing will be decided by penalties.
  • The most suitable footwear will be astro turf football trainers or moulded football boots.
