We are very grateful to Nick Higgins who visited us in school today to tell us all about The Battle of the Somme. He shared with us some fascinating knowledge about international and local history and told us about his Grandad George Higgins' involvement in the Battle from the First World War. He also shared with us information about his uncle, Ernest Bevin, whose tomb lies in Westminster Abbey near The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and that of Sir Winston Churchill. Year 6 will be following this learning up through independent research and studying some of Wilfred Owen's war poetry. Please encourage friends and relatives to talk to the children about personal histories, as they are so keen and enthusiastic to learn!
