The Devon County Winter Games, is the Level 3 County Championships of all the sports played and taken part in over the winter term. Sports included are Netball, Hockey, Cross Country, Volleyball, Handball and Table tennis. To qualify for this event you have to have finished 1st or 2nd in the local Level 2 competitions throughout the Winter term. This year, Wembury qualified for the cross country competition due to the success of our Year 5 & 6 girls and boys teams earlier in the school year.
The finals were held in Torbay where teams from all over Devon - Primary and Secondary - met to compete in the County finals.
A very early start was required due to the travel arrangements. We left Wembury at 7am to meet the coaches in Plymouth that transferred us to Torbay. Once there, there was an opening celebration ceremony with Taiko Drumming, dancing and some inspirational sports people like Ellie Cranch, who is from Plymouth originally and now represents England in Beach Volleyball.
Throughout the day here were taster sports sessions being run such as: Bounce aerobics, BMXing, Fencing and Athletics which the children were able to take part in as they wished.
As the time drew nearer for the cross country race, we were able to take them for a walk around the course so they could identify where they needed to be careful, speed up, be aware of the terrain and the very muddy patches. This was definitely beneficial for their race tactics and gave them confidence for their races.
The girls were up first and in a very fast start they were off. Much cheering and clapping from the supporters encouraged them around what was a very tricky course amd as they came up to the final hill (yes Hill!) our Daisy R and Maddy were in a really strong position finishing 17th and 18th respectively. Then came Sarah and Robyn with Phoebe and Lila not far behind them - Well done Girls!
Then it was the boys. A very competitive start saw some tousling for position as you can imagine, but they soon found their pace and went flying around around the course. Up the final hill came Henry finishing in 16th place with Zac and Azad hot on his tail and Lennie, Oliver and Josh close behind - Well done Boys!
What is really nice about this event is that as much as your individual position counts you run as a team and it is the whole team positions that get added up and counted at the end.
It was an anxious wait as the officials worked out the scores and announced the team positions.
Wembury Girls in 5th Position overall out of all of the Primary schools in Devon.
Wembury Boys in 11th Position overall out of all of the Primary schools in Devon.
Be proud of yourselves all of you - Wembury is certainly proud of you!!
Quite a day was had by all and children were very happy if not slightly muddy and tired as we headed back to the coaches for the journey home.
A huge thank you to PSSP, Active Devon and The School Games for the organisiation of what was a fantastic day for all.
