End of Year Swimming Success - July 2018

We certainly know how to finish the year with a bang - or in this case with a splash!

We are so lucky here at Wembury to have the amazing facility of our own swimming pool; we make sure we make full use of this during the Summer term and we are so grateful to our FROWS for assisting us with the costs of this facility. Each class has 3 timetabled hour long sessions per week and we ensure every child has equal access and opportunity to take part.

At the start of the 2017 academic year, there was a new Ofsted condition for PE funding which requires schools to publish how many pupils within their year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

This condition was added in response to recommendations from the Swim Group, who reviewed curriculum swimming and water safety in primary schools.

Being a coastal school, swimming and water safety is paramount to the safety and well being of our children and we have focussed on these life skills year on year and assess the development of the children throughout the summer term. A copy of our assessment criteria for KS2 can be found below. We are very pleased to be able to confirm that 100% of our year 6 2018 leavers left primary water confident and achieving our success criteria.

We finished the school year with an intra school healthy competition in the form of a swimming gala for all children. Houses in all year groups competed against eachother as an addition to our school games day and what a day it was. KS1 had their events in the morning and KS2 in the afternoon and to add to the occassion we even held a Waterpolo tournament between our Year 5 and 6 classes which was a triumph. Every child competed in at least 1 race throughout the day - we even had a staff race! And the whole of Year 5&6 took part in the Waterpolo which proved an occassion they will hopefully remember for ever and thus embedding our PE vision of 'Inspiring a love of health and fitness for life!'
