What a day at the Devon schools' Level 3 summer games. Teams from all over Devon, competing in such a huge range of events that they have qualified for earlier on in the year at the Level 2 events. Wembury were entered into 2 of today's spectaculars, the Super 6 Golf and the Rounders.
After a very impressive opening ceremony that included a dance/cheerleading performance, a rendition of 'I vow to thee my Country' and an inspiring speech by Rugby ledgend Thinus Deiport, all teams went their seperate ways to the location of their events.
Throughout the day, there were taster sports that all children were invited to try out and a hive of activity at every turn. Thinus Delport, the rugby star, did the rounds taking time to stop and chat with as many children as possible and provide autographs. In true Wembury style, our cheeky team decided to ask him to sign their shirts - which he happily did!
Wembury, always rising to the challenge, finished a very impressive 2nd place in the Super 6 golf, taking home the silver medals. Making them the second top team of primary school golfers in Devon! Worth mentioning at this point also that it is called the Super 6's golf as this is a competition designed for year 6 children - Wembury's Golf team was made up of some really super year 5's that certainly stepped up to the plate!
Our rounders team had a real challenge in front of them, not a game we have played too much of and certainly not ever by the very strict rules that applied to the game today. We learnt quickly, and as the day progressed began to win some games with our super team really giving it their all. We finished in a very respectable 7th position against some very tough opposition! The team also took a healthy like to the volley ball that was being offered as a taster sport - watch this space Wembury!
A special mention must also go to our very own Kayla, who was presented with a special medal for teamwork and sportsmanship - Well done Kayla!
All in all another very successful, enjoyable day that our Wembury pupils should be very proud of.
A huge thank you needs to go to all that organised the event, Plymouth SSP, Devon Active and Devon School Games. All of the youth sports leaders that helped to marshal and officiate throughout the day did a fantastic job, so thank you and we hope to see you all again next year!
