Today our Year 3/4 and 5/6 teams travelled to Okehampton for the annual Saints Southwest football tournament. Both teams competed in groups of 5, knowing that finishing 1st or 2nd had the extra incentive of an invitation to a regional tournament in either Taunton or Okehampton, competing against successful schools from the Somerset tournament.
All of our footballers are developing in to great team players, gaining a good understanding of their positions and their role in the team. Once again, they played some great football, with determined defending and confident attacking. Our Year 3/4 team started off with a 1-0 win, however the Year 5/6 team were defeated by Sherwell Valley (the overall winners in this age category). Both teams followed up their first match with a win. Year 3/4 then lost their next game (against Marine Academy Plymouth - overall winners) but Year 5/6 won theirs, meaning both teams had 2 wins from 3 matches. Year 3/4 drew their final game, meaning they finished in 2nd place in their tournament. Unfortunately Year 5/6 lost their final game meaning they finished in 3rd place, just missing out on a place at the regional tournament.
As you'll see from the pictures, all children tried their best and should be proud of themselves (some even came home with some wounds to show just how much dedication they played with!). We look forward to the regional event for the Year 3/4 team and other upcoming matches for all of our teams. Go Wembury!!
