Wow - what a fantastic day of football from start to finish! Today we hosted our first girls football tournament on the school fields. After building our teams over the last year, the girls relished the chance to put their skills to the test against other teams from all around Plymouth. In all, 11 teams entered our tournament today and we had the perfect weather for it! We even had a helicopter landing on the park field as teams were arriving!
Our two teams did brilliantly throughout the group matches. Unfortunately our Year 4/5 team didn't make it through to the quarter finals but our Year 6 team (plus Roma!) made it through, finishing top of their group, winning 3 matches, drawing one and losing their final game 1-0 (the only goal they conceded all day!). However, as one parent commented, it's remarkable to see the progress the Year 6 girls have made since this time last year. We are confident this experience will help our Year 4 and 5 girls improve lots over the next year and, who knows, maybe they'll be winning the trophy again this time next year?!
The Year 4/5 team took to supporting our Year 6 team through the quarter finals and semi-finals before we reached the final after 3-0 and 1-0 wins! They seemed to get better and better with every match. All of the girls are developing a good understanding of their positions and played some excellent football in their matches, passing the ball around like Brazil at times! After a very tense match in the final, and a few near misses for both teams, the score was 0-0 and the match would be decided on penalties!
There were some nervous faces as the girls volunteered and stepped up to take their penalties and even some tears as penalties were missed or saved by the brilliant Horrabridge goalkeeper. The score was tied at 3-3 after each team had taken 5 penalties. We went to 'sudden death'. After some brilliant saves by Megan and some excellent penalties by the rest of the team, the girls were mobbed by the rest of our children watching on the sidelines as we won the penalty shootout! It was fantastic to see how proud the children were; not just the girls playing but also their friends and children in other year groups. Well done girls - you were amazing and we are so proud of you! Well done to our Year 4 and 5 girls too - there will be many more opportunities for you next year! Congratulations also to Horrabridge, whose two teams finished in 2nd and 3rd place - a brilliant result for them!
We would really love to see any girls in the school that are interested in playing football going along to the Wild Cats girls football sessions. Thank you to Michaela (Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper) and the PAFC Community Trust for providing referees today. They have kindly offered all girls, in attendance at the tournament today, free Wildcats football sessions for the remainder of the term. The closest sessions are at Plymstock School on Thursdays, from 5-6pm. For more information, please click here.
Thank you as well to all schools that attended, making it such a great tournament as well as parents who attended and supported our teams throughout the day. Go Wembury!
